Mutt believes he isn’t talented but is eager to view the show and he wants to see all the animals strut their stuff. While seated in the stands to observe the affair, he notices that the barn is ablaze in the distance and Mutt goes to the rescue.

He dashes to the scene and helps release two horses from their smoke-filled stalls, and before you know it, the crowd is cheering and naming Mutt “Animal of the Year.”

An Emperor who cares for nothing but his appearance and attire hires two tailors who promise him the finest suit of clothes from a fabric invisible to anyone who is unfit for his position. Scottsdale, Ariz. – A brand new set of iPhone applications for children has hit the ground running thanks to a local Arizona dad who was looking for an affordable way to make reading books more fun for his kids.

Local creator, Justin James, in collaboration with his business partner and fellow father, has developed StoryChimes, a virtual collection of children’s stories designed to provide kids (ages three to eleven) a fun and educationally interactive reading experience.

“We believe StoryChimes really makes reading more fun!” says James, illustrator and co-creator. “Developing something that our own kids would love to use played a large role in the creation of this application. It introduces kids to today’s technological advancements in a fun and interactive way.”

To create StoryChimes, the two business partners assembled a pool of illustrators, writers, actors, and production talent from around the world to create a diverse look and sound to each story. The stories are then brought to life with original illustrations, music, character voices, and sound effects. These virtual books are designed to provide a 3-D interactive and tactile experience for both the child and parent. In addition to parents reading the stories to their children, StoryChimes encourages kids to “turn” pages and read along with the story or auto-play and listen to the narration by professional actors.

I think Siena Entertainment has hit one out of the park with StoryChime’s The Queen Bee (.99) a 21st Century take on the Brothers Grimm 1884 Fairy Tail.

Let me walk you through why. According to the company press release, Story Chimes was created by two young fathers who were looking for a way to educationally entertain their kids while promoting a contemporary way to make reading fun.” Well if my son is any indication, they certainly have found a way to make reading fun.

How it works is very familiar to ebook readers, though with a very welcome audio-book feature – a feature I’ve said before every ebook on an iPhone should have. When you open the book aka start the app, you’re greeted by a pleasant voice introducing the story. On your iPhone or iPod’s screen you get two virtual pages (just like opening a book) with colorful and well-done artwork. On the bottom there is auto-scrolling text and as I mentioned above the story is read to you. When you reach the end of the page, there is a pleasant audio chime and arrow letting you knows it’s time to turn the page. When you want to turn the page backwards or forwards you swipe your finger across the page aka screen, much like flipping the page in a paper book. Why am I getting excited with this app? Watch the video of my son, and notice his concentration. He’s reading a new book without my wife or I. Anyone who knows children and the importance of repetition in reading (yes it’s very important developmentally to read the same story over and over again) will recognize what this means. No, not that you don’t have to read to your children, you should do that, but now you have an ally who never gets tired (just needs a charge now and then) and can help keep them excited to want to read.

Now that the bar has been set this high I have some concerns. I really wish there were some sort of reading level rating (think marketing this to schools) system, and I’d like to see a way other than the iPhone’s mute switch to turn the audio book feature off (iPod Touch users will appreciate that) also, I wish the pages turned just a tad easier and didn’t seem keyed to audio book feature having read the page before it can be turned, – my son like most kids likes to jump around, reread his favorite parts, etc. Despite these few things that I think could be improved, have no doubt this is a strong app, do your children a favor and get some StoryChimes for them to read.

In this evil evil world of constant stimulation and sex on television and kids obsessed with downloading the latest fart or poop gag to entertain themselves for five seconds, it’s nice to see a high-tech device come up with a nice piece of throw-back entertainment.

It’s called StoryChimes, and it’s a series of interactive storybooks. Today we’ll be looking at Little Red Riding Hood. While the story is a bit more watered down than I’d like, I still love all the features and see it as a great alternative to full-motion, imagination destroying cartoons.

It would be nice if this one had a “coverflow” view of the pages or a quick way to navigate to your favorite parts of the book, but I can only assume that these features will be added to later books. In general, this is a great way to sit down and let your kids read along to a book–or a great way to have all your kids favorite stories with you all the time.

The Queen Bee is a tale of three brothers, princes actually, who couldn’t be more different. The youngest and simplest of the bunch sets out in search of his much more adventurous brothers.

His brothers find him something of a nuisance, and simple too! They tease and bully him the whole journey until they arrive at an enchanted castle that’s been turned to stone.

They are given three challenges to complete to restore the castle to its original beauty, and whoever completes all three tasks will be rewarded with the princess’ hand in marriage. Simpleton finds a way to beat the odds and break the enchantment, living happily ever after.

WHEN WORDS DREAM is a painting and poetry book. It incorporates poems written by children with illustrations by the Mexican artists Esaú Andrade and Guadalupe Valencia. The poems were generated in an art workshop held at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles. The poetry workshop that resulted in this amazing book was one of a series of handson community outreach programs designed and developed by Mercedes Gertz and Nora Suárez to bring artists and inner city children together in mutually enriching creative ways. This poetry workshop was designed and conducted by critic and writer, Marlena Doktorczyk-Donohue from poetry workshops she has given to children and adults in various settings.

The Red Shoes revolves around the story of a poor orphan girl who longs to be more and want more from life. She’s spent most of her life living in rags until one day while walking through the kingdom in the forest, a carriage pulls over. It’s the Queen as luck would have it! The Queen, however, wasn’t there to pick up orphaned girls, but rather to bestow a gift. She gave to the orphan a pair of red shoes – magical shoes – with a warning. All the while, the princess traveling with the Queen looked quite happy.

The orphan couldn’t wait to wear the shoes into town that very night. She came to discover that they had a price. The red shoes she coveted had a mind of their own. Once she started to dance, the shoes didn’t quite. Only a handsome soldier in the Queen’s army came to her rescue, before she collapsed. From that moment all she could think about was how to get back to her true love. The upcoming Royal Ball was the perfect place to find him she thought! Of course, the prettiest thing she owned were the pretty red shoes. She did meet the handsome soldier again, the shoes did still have a mind of their own, but in the end all was right. They kissed and did live happily ever after.

The Frog Prince is the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale in which a young Princess loses her favorite golden ball in a nearby spring. Only a nice frog can rescue her ball from the deep waters.

Thinking the little frog can’t leave the water, she promises him anything he asks as long as she gets her ball back. Turns out, that’s not quite how the story goes!

Story Chime storybook apps that have the great chime sound I remember from books on tape when I was a kid. Those magical chimes that meant it was time to turn the page. Little Red Riding Hood is one of the books in their collection. We enjoyed the illustrations and the narration. They’ve done a good job reading the story with expression and performing the character’s voices.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read Little Red Riding Hood and I’d forgotten what a silly little girl she was. Hello stranger, let’s just chat in the woods and by the way let me tell you exactly where I’m heading and one last thing, my poor sickly, tasty grandma is stuck in bed and can’t get up. She might as well have just hopped in the wolf’s mouth right there. This version takes a humane approach and granny winds up tied up in the closet instead of in the wolf’s tummy. This means the woodcutter doesn’t have to use his ax to free her. Much easier for the younger readers to take. Well done.

I am so thrilled with all of the choices for iPhone/iPod touch stories on the iTunes store. It is wonderful to see iPhone app developers create educational applications. My kids love reading the books on my iPhone and on their iPod Touches. Recently my kids and I tried StoryChimes narrated story Little Red Riding Hood. The story is very nicely illustrated with soothing colors on pages that my children can turn.

StoryChimes, created by Siena Entertainment, are affordable iPhone/iPod touch children stories which are an alternative to video games, movies, and TV shows. The stories feature original illustrations, music, character voices, and sound effects are brought to life. These stories are designed to provide a 3-D interactive and tactile experience for both the child and parent. StoryChimes encourages the user to “turn” pages with their fingers, read along with the story, or auto-play and listen to the narration by professional actors.

Story Chimes has exciting titles like The Red Shoes, Noah’s Moon, Benjamin’s Walk in the Woods, When Words Dream, Mother Goose Fairytales Vol 1 and 2 (both free), and a The Queen Bee. Justin James helped create a series of children’s books for iPhones and iPods. The books are called StoryChimes.

They include music, artwork, and the voices of professional actors. And kids can change pages with the flick of a finger.

James wanted to build these virtual books for two reasons — to give his daughter Natalie educationally-entertaining reading, and to make money to support his family.

“I want to occupy her time whether we’re at the supermarket or something like that. I can give this to her and she can kind of play with it and listen to a story,” says James. “I just think it’s a little more educational than maybe some sort of game or something she might be playing with.”

StoryChimes has gone international on iTunes and its commercial is even airing in Chicago.

One of the wonderful things about having an iPhone is the remarkable applications that are available for entertaining and educating children. Because we are fortunate enought to be a part of our grandchildren’s daily life, they are with us quite often when we go to necessary appointments. Our grandchildren love to play just about anything on our iPhones but I prefer applications that teach and help educate them.

Story Chimes is a great source of educational and entertaining stories for the iPhone. I recently was able to share The Queen Beestory with my 3-year old grand daughter and 6-year old grandson. They both enjoyed it right long with me. The Queen Bee is the story of three “royal” brothers who are as different as night and day.

The two older brothers set out on an adventure and find themselves getting into trouble. The youngest brother goes in search of his brothers however the older ones are not happy when he finds them. The youngest of the three brothers is kind to everyone and everything, not at all like his brothers.

When the brothers are met with the challenge of saving a cursed castle, it’s the youngest brother who saves the day when all the animals he had earlier been kind to come together to help him.

The Queen Bee StoryChimes is an interactive children’s audiobook app for the iPhone and iPod touch that invites kids to turn the pages when they hear the chime.

The story is about ten minutes long, and even my 10-year-old enjoyed it. Younger children will probably be happy to listen to it more than once.

What’s Hot:
This classic story by the Brothers Grimm hasn’t lost its appeal, despite being almost 300 years old. Three brothers go adventuring together. The youngest (and kindest) of the three saves various insects and animals from his careless, unfeeling siblings, and reaps his just reward because of it.

What’s Not:
In “Play With Text” mode the illustrations are crammed into the top half of the iPhone’s screen so that the text can appear at the bottom. Since the story’s vocabulary is a little hard going anyway, have your kids play the story without text so they can see the books pages in more detail.

The Bottom Line:
A nice story at a nice price. StoryChimes has ten other titles too, so stock up before your next plane trip.
